Reducing Environmental Risk

New York has banned single-use plastic toiletry bottles

Tackling plastic waste has been a priority for New York authorities for many years. In January this year, a law banning single-use toiletry bottles in hotels with more than 50 rooms was introduced.

This means that small soaps, shampoos and other disposable toiletries will no longer be a common sight in hotels. Here are some important points to consider about this new legislation.

What is the purpose of the law?

Single-use plastic bottles are a significant polluter. These materials do not degrade even after hundreds of years, causing lasting environmental harm. The main aim of the legislation is to cut down on plastic waste by up to 300 million tons each year while encouraging sustainable alternatives.

What happens if hotels don’t comply?

Larger hotels are expected to comply immediately, with smaller institutions following suit by 2026. If issues are discovered, the establishment will be notified and will have 30 days to rectify any issues. After that, hotel establishments may be fined up to $500 for subsequent violations. Non-compliance may also significantly harm the business’s reputation among environmentally conscious consumers.

How can businesses be proactive?

Hotels can get ahead by rethinking their strategies in terms of stocking toiletries. Using refillable packaging and bulk dispensers can eliminate waste and ensure compliance with ease. Many suppliers now offer more environmentally friendly solutions, such as biodegradable or reusable containers. It’s also important for hotels to train all staff on the latest changes in the law and provide guests with clear information about these eco-friendly initiatives.

For more information on these changes or any other aspect of environmental compliance in New York, it may be beneficial to seek legal guidance.
